If you plan a trip to Thailand and have some time and budget, Chiangmai is a place you should not miss. It was the capital of north Thailand kingdom in the past called Lanna. Chiangmai nowadays, despite the invasion of modern civilization, is still rich in ancient arts and culture. Another charm of the city comes naturally from the friendliness and hospitality of local people.
Chiangmai is located far north of Thailand, a 700 km drive from Bangkok. Not too far indeed. It takes only about an hour by plane (less time than driving 10 km in downtown Bangkok traffic). Alternatively, you can use bus or rail services which are cheaper but take longer time. Many tourists, including us, favor a train that leaves in the evening and arrives at the destination the next morning. They provides two story beds in each section, air-conditioned, with 2 restrooms per bogie. You can check the actual price at Thai railway website, approximately USD 20 for a 2nd class ticket (slightly different price for upper and lower bed, the former costs less.)
