In Thailand (and some other countries), Sep 26 - Oct 6, 2011 is a special period called "Nine Emperor God Festival,", originated from the Chinese. In Thai we simply call it the "Je Festival" (เทศกาลเจ), or simply "Gin Je," (to eat Je food). One can read all the historic details from wiki. The essence we want to mention is, during these 10 days many people abstain from eating meat, poultry, seafood, and dairy products. Strictly speaking, there's some slight difference from vegetarian diet because some vegetables are also prohibited as well (for example, garlic and onion).
While we can have Je food anywhere in Bangkok during the festival, the most famous place to enjoy Je is, of course, Yao-wa-rat (also known as Chinatown). So we go there and take some pictures for those of you who still have not visited the place. We warn you that the traffic in Yaowarat is a chaos. Better take the MRT subway train to Hualumphong, which is within walk distance to Yaowarat.
